Phosphinomethylmalate, also known as 2-(hydroxyphosphonoylmethyl)butanedioate, belongs to short-chain hydroxy acids and derivatives class of compounds. Those are hydroxy acids with an alkyl chain the contains less than 6 carbon atoms. Phosphinomethylmalate is soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa).
