N,n-dimethyl-β-alanine is slightly soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). N,n-dimethyl-β-alanine can be found in a number of food items such as shiitake, sparkleberry, swede, and almond, which makes n,n-dimethyl-β-alanine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
