Menadiol, also known as 2-methyl-1,4-naphthohydroquinone or dihydrovitamin k3, belongs to naphthols and derivatives class of compounds. Those are naphthalene derivatives carrying one or more hydroxyl (-OH) groups at any ring position. Menadiol is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Menadiol can be synthesized from naphthalene-1,4-diol. Menadiol can also be synthesized into S-(1,4-dihydroxy-3-methylnaphthalen-2-yl)glutathione. Menadiol can be found in a number of food items such as mexican groundcherry, arrowhead, scarlet bean, and canola, which makes menadiol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
