描述
Ribulose-5-phosphate, also known as xylulose-P or 5-O-phosphono-D-threo-pentos-2-ulose, is a member of the class of compounds known as pentose phosphates. Pentose phosphates are carbohydrate derivatives containing a pentose substituted by one or more phosphate groups. Ribulose-5-phosphate is soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Ribulose-5-phosphate can be found in a number of food items such as pine nut, yellow pond-lily, kai-lan, and sapodilla, which makes ribulose-5-phosphate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Ribulose-5-phosphate can be found primarily in cellular cytoplasm. Ribulose-5-phosphate exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, ribulose-5-phosphate is involved in the pentose phosphate pathway. Ribulose-5-phosphate is also involved in few metabolic disorders, which include glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency, transaldolase deficiency, and warburg effect. Ribulose-5-phosphate is formed by phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and it can be acted upon by phosphopentose isomerase and phosphopentose epimerase .
