4-alpha-methyl-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-3-one, also known as (4alpha,5alpha)-4-methylcholest-7-en-3-one, belongs to cholesterols and derivatives class of compounds. Those are compounds containing a 3-hydroxylated cholestane core. Thus, 4-alpha-methyl-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-3-one is considered to be a sterol lipid molecule. 4-alpha-methyl-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-3-one is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Within the cell, 4-alpha-methyl-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-3-one is primarily located in the membrane (predicted from logP). It can also be found in the extracellular space. 4-alpha-methyl-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-3-one exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans.
