4,4-dimethyl-5α-cholesta-8-en-3-β-ol is a member of the class of compounds known as triterpenoids. Triterpenoids are terpene molecules containing six isoprene units. 4,4-dimethyl-5α-cholesta-8-en-3-β-ol is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak acidic compound (based on its pKa). 4,4-dimethyl-5α-cholesta-8-en-3-β-ol can be found in a number of food items such as acerola, winged bean, capers, and carrot, which makes 4,4-dimethyl-5α-cholesta-8-en-3-β-ol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
