14-hydroxylanosterol is a member of the class of compounds known as triterpenoids. Triterpenoids are terpene molecules containing six isoprene units. 14-hydroxylanosterol is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak acidic compound (based on its pKa). 14-hydroxylanosterol can be found in a number of food items such as anise, cucurbita (gourd), oil palm, and tea leaf willow, which makes 14-hydroxylanosterol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. 14-hydroxylanosterol exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans.
