(r)-mevalonate, also known as mevalonic acid or acid, mevalonic, is a member of the class of compounds known as hydroxy fatty acids. Hydroxy fatty acids are fatty acids in which the chain bears a hydroxyl group (r)-mevalonate is soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). (r)-mevalonate can be found in a number of food items such as italian sweet red pepper, cloves, chicory roots, and strawberry, which makes (r)-mevalonate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
