UDP-N-acetyl-D-mannosamine is involved in teichoic acid (poly-glycerol) biosynthesis pathway and enterobacterial common antigen biosynthesis pathway. It serves as both enzymatic reactants and products in those two pathways.
In teichoic acid (poly-glycerol) biosynthesis pathway, UDP-N-acetyl-mannosamine is synthesized from UDP-N-acetyl-glocasamine by UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase, encoded by the mnaA gene [HMDB]
